Canon Law

The study of canon law mainly consists of the study of the Code of Canon Law. A number of disciplines are related to this subject: Theology of canon law, philosophy of law, fundamental concepts of Roman law, elements of civil law, history of the fundamental canonical structures of canon law, history of the sources of canon law, the relationship between the Church and civil society, and canonical administrative and judicial practice. We also offer an introduction to the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches and the study of Latin, as well as optional courses, exercises and seminars.

Offered by the Faculty of Canon Law, the ecclesiastical programs in Canon Law also allow students to receive civil degrees, such as the Graduate Diploma in Canon Law, Graduate Diploma in Canonical Practice or Graduate Diploma in Ecclesiastical Administration and the Master's in Canon Law.

Offered through Western University's Department of Philosophy, the certificate is being offered as a response to a wide and growing interest in the ethical dimensions of professional and public life.

The purpose of this program is to enable participants to strengthen and develop their understanding of ethics so as to enhance their ability to recognize and respond to ethical issues in a wide variety of social settings.

The Certificate in Ethics will educate students in the essential concepts, central issues, history and methodologies of ethical reasoning. The program also emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills, writing skills and verbal skills.

The CNPSS is 5.0 credit program is administered by the School of Public Policy and Administration. Currently, courses in the Nunavut Certificate are offered in partnership with Nunavut Sivuniksavut, a postsecondary program for Inuit from Nunavut. Courses in the program include Public Administration in Nunavut and options such as Qualitative Research Methods.

This Certificate program is designed primarily for prospective or practicing public employees in Nunavut who seek special training in public service subjects at the undergraduate level. Courses taken for the Certificate may be credited towards a Bachelor of Arts degree. A transfer student from the Certificate program into the Bachelor of Arts program normally will be required to take at least 10.0 further credits. At least 5.0 of the credits required for the degree must be completed after awarding of the Certificate.

The CTESL program, offered by Carletons School of Linguistics and Language Studies, is one of Canadas oldest and best-known TESL programs. The CTESL program includes courses in theory and methodology, as well as a practicum that includes opportunities for classroom observation and supervised teaching in a variety of settings.

With the proper course selection, the program may be taken simultaneously with the 4-year Honours program in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, or with other majors, allowing you to graduate with both a degree and a certificate at the same time. You can also pursue this program as a post-degree certificate.

The CTESL program concentrates on teaching English to adults, either in Canada or abroad. It is widely recognized in Canada as a qualification to teach ESL at the postsecondary level in private language schools, colleges and universities. Overseas, it can lead to teaching positions at the elementary and secondary school levels, as well as at the adult level.

The Certificate in Theatre Arts provides training in drama and theatrical performance that meets the requirements for Drama as a teachable subject in the Faculty of Education.

In addition to 2.0 courses that study drama as a literary genre, the Certificate requires participation as a member of either the cast or crew for the Department of English and Writing Studies' Annual Fall Theatre Production (English 2041F/G), 0.5 course in Canadian drama with an emphasis on performance and pedagogy (English 3776F/G), and two 0.5-credit summer courses offered in partnership with and on the campus of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (Theatre Studies 3206F/G and Theatre Studies 3207F/G).

Saint Paul University offers programs leading to a Master of Arts (MA) in Conflict Studies, which is conferred jointly by the Senates of Saint Paul University and the University of Ottawa.

The focus of the program is on the ethnic and religious identity distinctions that characterize many deep-rooted conflicts. The program explores the meaning of, and generates processes for, reconciliation, healing and structural change. It combines a social science orientation common to Conflict Studies programs with a philosophical, ethical and theological orientation.

Counselling and Spirituality

The Faculty of Human Sciences at Saint Paul University offers programs leading to a Graduate Diploma in Couple Counselling and Spirituality, a Graduate Diploma in Supportive Care and Spirituality in Palliation and a Master of Arts (MA) in Counselling and Spirituality, all conferred jointly by the Senates of Saint Paul University and of the University of Ottawa, with which Saint Paul is federated.
